Global Warming
True or False?
Global warming is an issue with which we should be concerned
True. Global warming has been predicted for decades due to increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The majority of scientists now agree that definite signs of global warming are apparent. This has led to:
- Ocean warming - leading to changes in animal and plant ranges and population changes, worldwide coral bleaching and mortality and an increased number of storms and droughts.
- Glacier melting - leading to higher sea levels and coastal flooding.
- Artic and Antarctic warmingg - polar ice helps cool the planet by reflecting sunlight. As the ice melts, more light and heat are retained; this further warms the planet.
- A reduction of the ozone level - is another possible side effect of global warming.
A prediction
- Unless greenhouse emissions are curbed, average global temperatures can climb two to three degrees Celsius by 2100. The last time the earth was that warm, sea levels were 80 feet higher than today. Quote from James Hansen of NASA.
