Nuisance Species
What is it?
It is a non-native animal or plant that can reproduce quickly in a new habitat
What can it do?
It will feed and grow in an area where it did not previously exist.
Is it harmful?
It can reproduce quickly and out compete native species for food and habitat. Nuisance species, once established, can be hard to eliminate.
What can I do to protect against a nuisance species?
Follow these simple rules to protect your aquatic environment:
- Never release your aquarium pets into streams, rivers and lakes.
- Learn to recognize unfamiliar plants and animals that might look out of place.
- Avoid transporting nuisance species.
- Take an active role in your community through education, understanding and implementing positive methods for protecting your environment against nuisance species.
